SESSION D7 / Glass Room / 17 May 2024 / 09:00 - 10:00

Workshop: Internet of Things application in biorefineries

Chair / Presidente: Maria Rosa Di Cicco, Carmine Lubritto (IT)

The workshop aims to explore the intersection of cutting-edge technologies and biological systems in addressing pressing environmental and industrial challenges. Focused on the innovative landscape of biorefineries, our contributions will delve into two key aspects: the implementation of IoT-based photobioreactors and the pivotal role of extremophilic microalgae in recovering critical elements from waste streams.
The session will begin with an overview of the current landscape of biorefineries, highlighting the growing importance of sustainable and efficient processes in resource recovery. We will then delve into the emerging trend of IoT-based photobioreactors, discussing how real-time monitoring, control, and optimization provided by IoT technologies enhance the efficiency and scalability of microalgae cultivation. Following on from this concept, the session also welcomes the discussion of any experiences of sustainable recycling of high-impact waste, where the implementation of IoT solution could usefully contribute to improving performance in productive contexts.
Furthermore, the session will explore the remarkable capabilities of extremophiles, microorganisms adapted to thrive in extreme environments, in the context of recovering critical elements from waste streams. By leveraging extremophiles' unique biochemical pathways and metal-binding capabilities, attendees will gain insights into novel approaches for the extraction and purification of critical metals and rare earth elements from electronic waste (WEEE) and industrial effluents.
Through interactive discussions and case studies, attendees will have the opportunity to deepen their understanding of the synergistic potential of IoT-based photobioreactors and extremophiles in the biorefinery landscape. Additionally, the session will foster networking opportunities and encourage collaboration among researchers, industry professionals, and policymakers to drive innovation and sustainability in biorefinery technologies.
