Workshop: Sustainable landfilling Vs. soil sink

Chair / Presidente: Raffaello Cossu (IT)

The deposition of waste on soil is a key component of Circular Economy strategies, as it enables the closure of material cycles through the disposalof residues and non-recyclable waste. However, current EU regulations do not adequately address this unavoidable need, lacking a clear set of technical recommendations to support sustainable solutions. This workshop aims to explore and provide answers to several critical questions: What types of residues are appropriate for deposition on soil? What environmental targets should be set, and what treatments should residues undergo accordingly? How should soil deposits be engineered and integrated into circular systems? Should such deposits be considered temporary (with the potential for future recovery) or final? How should we refer to sustainable deposition on soil? Is there a need for a new taxonomy?
